Everyone’s buzzing about the latest "iPhone Killer", the Nokia Tube. First off let me say I hate the term "iPhone Killer". There hasn’t been a single phone that has even come close to matching the iPhone’s stature as the Tickle Me Elmo of mobile phones and yet that term is already over played. Nokia released just a few details yesterday at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City. Essentially following the iPhone’s form factor the Nokia Tube makes a couple of improvements.
Unlike the iPhone, the Tube will feature Java support. Best of all the Tube will ship with 3G (High Speed Data) connectivity, something that is sorely missed on the iPhone. Apple claims that 3G is coming soon but the question will be which will be here first? The iPhone with 3G or the Tube?
Nokia is very confident in their ability to compete with the wildly popular iPhone. Tom Libretto of Nokia scoffed at the 6 million iPhones sold since its release saying, "We’ve done that [volume] since we’ve had dinner on Friday."
In my not so humble opinion, there is clearly a market and a demand for the Nokia tube, but an "iPhone Killer"? Me thinks not, but sweet none the less.
